Wrath of The Titans

I really wanted to like this movie. The first one was ultimately a disappointment, but had this goofy Dungeons & Dragons feel, the promise of monsters vs adventurers, and a cast that didn’t take themselves too seriously. It was a throwback to a simpler time: the sword and sorcery films of the 1980s. Krull, Conan, Dragonslayer, Beastmaster, the orginal Clash of The Titans and others all were actually terrible but burrowed into of our childhood imagination.

Sadly, while there are a few decent action beats, and a couple shots that would make nice stills or posters, Wrath of The Titans is little more than 3 (incredibly similar looking) locations and 4 big action set-pieces. We move from one fight to the next with the barest of transitions, and few notable moments to get to know the characters.

The Goon

I propose a new genre: Violence-comedy.

What better setting for a film to kick-off this unexplored terrority than the world of minor league hockey, one that you imagine is equally rife with opportunities for laughter and bloodshed.

In addition the bareknuckle fights and juvenile laughs, this barebones hockey film turned out to be easily the most enjoyable sports film in quite a while.

It captures the same underog spirit and cast of odd characters as Major League but with extra punching and face-periods.

Good times. Check it out.
